Take the quiz: "WHAT RELIGION BESTS SUITS YOU?"

Atheist
You are Godless! You could care less about religion. As far as you're concerned, if you can't see, touch and kick something, it's not real to you. You're day-to-day activities consist of eating, working, sleeping and the occasional Internet or coffee shop debate. Lastly, if anyone chooses to preach at you otherwise, you will either leave or debate them until they finally shut up.

Well... Isn't that just interesting as fuck?
I told you people that I wasn't religious.

1000 Memories - Bad Religion

You were the one,
You were my everything
Never apart,
No one in-between
Then one day,
When you went your own way
You felt justified,
And I was mortified
But today...
You are just a picture
And a thousand memories
Is all I take with me
Cause your smile
Is just too much to see
You're just a thousand memories
Fantasies, broken dreams
Reveries, sordid histories
Following my heart,
Laden with reaction,
Without calibration or design
Committed to a trial,
A life of understanding
Can't somebody show a sign to you?
For me, to see if you only knew
That you were the one...
Cause a picture is worth
One thousand memories

Peace

This entry is to anyone whom has stood up for something that they believe in, only to be immediately shot down by someone that doesn't even know them. No, I'm not talking about you, Kitah.

I'm actually speaking of the moderator and co-mod of a community called fuckpunks. In this comm. people are praised for putting down the punk scene and everything about it. I, being the way I am, decided to put my two cents in and bitch to all of them about what punk is, what it's not, and why their discrimination is so misplaced.

I was standing up for something that I believed in. And guess what.

Yes, both the mod and the co-mod of the community posted a comment. The moderator I believe said something like "gay" to my post in the community. I was angry but I've chosen not to say anything to her because I would only be feeding the fire and arguing stupidly. So fuck what other people think. I dsjoined the community and stuff so it really doesn't matter.

But it annoys the hell out of me that such things go on like these. For someone merely speaking up for something that they think is right only for this person to get shot down in an instant. I'm really not even only talking about myself. I looked at some of the past few people who have posted things such as what I posted in the comm and these people got the SAME KIND OF THINGS.

So what exactly is my point? I'm not really sure. It's a cross between fascists suck because we all should not think or even act the same as one another, or that people who put other people down because of their beliefs are thick-headed and close-minded. I'm not sure really. You decide. I'll listen. I'm not a corporate fashion punk. I am open-minded.

Fuck the fascists.

Peace

Yippee. I leave for St. Augustine on Monday. I'm overjoyed. Really.... Not. I have to decide on a suitable amount of money to take... I've got no fucking clue what-so-ever. Any suggestions?

Anyway, I've decided that I'm only going to take 5-8 CDs with me. Damn. Now I have to narrow my collection down to a select few. I will definately take both disc 1 and 2 of the Warped '04 Compilation. And the 2 Bad Religion CDs... Since I haven't got the new one yet... Still kicking myself for not buying it when I had the chance. But anyway... I don't know what other music to take. Any suggestions?

And I also must go shopping. That's right. S-h-o-p-p-i-n-g. Shopping. For "swimwear". Fucking peachy. And I have to take my dad. Even better. Oh yeah, I'm gonna love getting ready for this trip... Not.

"I'd scream this song right in your face..."

Why? Why does this DAMN SONG get stuck in my head when I don't even listen to Story of the Year????

If you don't know what song... It would be "Anthem of Our Dying Day". It's a wonderful song however. Beautiful lyrics. But it's stuck in my fucking head. Which means that I despise it. At the moment.

As a matter of fact... The phrase that continues to play is the chorus... Go fucking figure.
"From up here the city lights burn
Like a thousand miles of fire
And I'm here to sing this anthem
Of our dying day"

Grr...

But I suppose it's better than having "Striking at mental apparitions like a drunk on a vacant street" line stuck in my head. Perhaps.
...Okay...
That only makes me want to listen to Bad Religion.
I shall now face the fact that music is screwing me over. Like the rest of world.

Peace

For the first time in a couple of days... I'm bored outta my fucking mind. Can you believe it? I sure as hell can.

But anywayz...

The Chateau Elan puts on a wonderful display of fireworks. I was only there because my dad's boss lives there. He has a fucking driving range in his basement. And a very beautiful mohagany baby grand piano. If you know how I am around pianos... You know how I kept myself entertained. I'm in love with pianos. Can you tell?

St. Augustine is closer than ever... I'll be leaving in less than a week. I really can't wait. I can't wait to be on a trip with six of my peers (2 other girls, 4 guys) who listen to country music and are dedicated to the FFA whole-heartedly. Sounds wonderful, don't it? But fuck it, I'll live. I wonder how much money I should take....

Peace

I had another one of those dreams you know... where you don't want to wake up... Unfortunately I did though

And that guy from North Region Rally... His name was Chase. Have you ever not been able to recall someone's name but then they suddenly appear in a dream and you remember it? It's crazy...

I also wrote another poem...
I get so bored sometimes.
And in my current quest for knowledge and what other people think and believe, I look towards two people.

These two people are more widely known for their music, rather than their essays... But the music and the essays are interesting and thought-provoking. If you don't know who I'm talking about, the two people are Justin Sane (of Anti-flag) and Greg Graffin (of Bad Religion).

I guess I'm pretty *new* (if that's the word you wanna use) to the "punk-rock" scene. And I get new ideas from it and its views everyday.

Well, today... I got bored again. And I finally found the essays of my favorite vocalist, Greg Graffin. Though none of his essays are very new (the newest from 1998), they still have the same lasting effect on me. I enjoyed reading every one of them that I read and I would just like to put the article that meant the most to me here.

A PUNK MANIFESTO »
By Greg Graffin
Bad Times, 12/98

I have never owned a record label, nor directed a successful merchandise company, so I don't pretend to be an expert on marketing. I have evolved through my craft as a songwriter, but others have labeled it and marketed it and made it neat for consumption.

Although I have made money from Punk, it is a modest amount when one considers the bounty that has been bestowed on the companies that promote Punk as some sort of a product to be ingested. It has always been my way to de-value the fashionable, light-hearted, impulsive traits that people associate with Punk, because Punk is more than that, so much more that those elements become trivial in the light of human experience that all punkers share.

Since it has been a part of me for over half of my life, I think the time has come to attempt a definition, and in the process defend, this persistent social phenomenon known as Punk. It is astounding that something with so much emotional and trans- cultural depth has gone without definition for so long, for the roots of Punk run deeper, and go back in history farther than imagined.

Even in the last two decades, it is difficult to find any analysis of the influential effect that Punk Rock had on Pop Music and youth culture. And rarer still are essays detailing the emotional and intellectual undercurrents that drive the more overt fashion statements that most people attribute to Punk.

These are some of the wants that compelled me to write this. If my attempt offends the purists, collapses the secrecy of a closed society, promotes confidence in skeptical inquiry, provokes deeper thought, and decodes irony, then I have done my job and those who feel slighted might recognize the triviality of their position. For I have nothing to promote but my observations on a sub-culture that has grown to global proportions, and through visiting much of it, I have found threads of common thought everywhere.

Common thought processes are what determine the ideology that binds people together into a community. There is desire among Punks to be a community, but there needs to be some shape imparted on the foundations of the punk ideology, and where it comes from. The current Punk stereotype is scarred by mass-marketing and an unfortunate emphasis on style over substance.

But these ills don't destroy the Punk sentiment, they merely confound the education of the new generations of people who know they are punk, but don't know what it means. It is a long road to understand what it means. This essay is part of the process.

PUNKS ARE NOT BEASTS

Punk is a reflection of what it means to be human. What separates us from other animals? Our ability to recognize ourselves and express our own genetic uniqueness. Ironically, the commonly held view, among the marketeers and publicity engines, stresses the "animalistic", "primitive" nature of punks and their music.

They assume that violence is a key ingredient in punk music, and this assumption is easily perpetuated because it is easy to market violence and news items about violence always get column space. This focus on violence misses a key element of what Punk is all about:

PUNK IS: the personal expression of uniqueness that comes from the experiences of growing up in touch with our human ability to reason and ask questions.

Violence is neither common in, nor unique to punk. When it does manifest itself it is due to things unrelated to the punk ideal. Consider for example the common story of a fight at a high school between a punk and a jock football player. The football player and his cohort do not accept or value the punk as a real person. Rather, they use him as a vitriol receptacle, daily taunting, provoking, and embarrassing him, which of course is no more than a reflection of their own insecurities.

One day, the punk has had enough and he clobbers the football captain in the hallway. The teachers of course expell the punk and cite his poor hairstyle and shabby clothing as evidence that he is a violent, uncontrollable no-good. The community newspaper reads "Hallway Beating Re-affirms that Violence is a Way of Life Among Punk Rockers".

Spontaneous anger at not being accepted as a real person is not unique to punkers. This reaction is due to being human, and anybody would react in anger regardless of their sub- cultural, or social affiliation if they felt de- valued and useless. Sadly, there are plenty of examples of violence among punks. There are glaring examples of misguided people who call themselves punks too. But anger and violence are not punk traits, in fact, they have no place in the punk ideal. Anger and violence are not the glue that holds the punk community together.

IN UNIQUENESS IS THE PRESERVATION OF MANKIND

Nature bestowed on us the genetic backbone of what punk is all about. There are roughly 80,000 genes in the human genome, and there are roughly 6 billion people carrying that genetic compliment. The chances of two people carrying the same genome are so small as to be almost beyond comprehension (the odds are essentially ? 80,000 times the number of possible people you can meet and mate with in a lifetime! A practical impossibility)

The genes we carry play a major role in determining our behavior and outlook on life. That is why we have the gift of uniqueness, because no one else has the same set of genes controlling their view of the world. Of course cultural factors play the other major role, and these can have a more homogenizing effect on behavior and world-view.

For example, an entire working-class town might have 15,000 residents who are raised with the same ideals, work at the same factories, go to the same schools, shop at the same stores, and like the same sports teams. As their children develop, there is a constant interaction of opposite forces between the social imprinting their culture imparts and the genetic expression of uniqueness.

Those who lose touch with their nature become society's robots, whereas those who denounce their social development become vagrant animals. Punk stands for a desire to walk the line in between these two extremes with masterful precision. Punks want to express their own unique nature, while at the same time want to embrace the communal aspects of their cookie-cutter upbringing.

The social connection they have is based on a desire to understand each other's unique view of the world. Punk "scenes" are social places where those views are accepted, sometimes adopted, sometimes discarded, but always tolerated and respected.

PUNK IS: a movement that serves to refute social attitudes that have been perpetuated through willful ignorance of human nature.

Because it depends on tolerance and shuns denial, Punk is open to all humans. There is an elegant parallel between Punk's dependence on unique views and behaviors and our own natural genetic predisposition toward uniqueness.

THE BATTLE OF FEAR AND RATIONALITY

The compulsion to conform is a powerful side-effect of civilized life. We are all taught to respect the views of our elders, and later when we realize that they are just dogmatic opinions, we are taught not to make a commotion by asking difficult questions. Many just go along with the prevailing notions and never express their own views, which is analogous to a premature death of the individual.

Our species is unique in the ability to recognize and express the self, and not exercising this biological function goes against the natural selection gradient that created it in the first place. This complacency combats a fear of failure.

It is easy to assume that if everyone else is doing something, then there is no way to fail if you just go along with it. Cattle and flocks of geese can probably recognize this advantage. But the entire human race could fail because of this mentality.

Thinking and acting in a direction against the current of popular opinion is critical to human advancement, and a potent manifestation of Punk. If an issue or phenomenon is found to be true only because other people say it is so, then it is a Punk's job to look for a better solution, or at least find an independent variable that confirms the held view (sometimes the popular view is just a reflection of human nature, Punks don't live in denial of this).

This ability to go against the grain was a major part of the greatest advances in human thinking throughout history. The entire Enlightenment period was characterized by ideas that shunned the dogma of the time, only to reveal truths in nature and human existence that all people can observe, and that are still with us today.

Galileo fought the church, the church won the battle, by putting him in jail for life, but ultimately lost the war; few people today believe that the sun orbits around the earth, and thus God didn't create the earth as the center of the universe. Francis Bacon insisted that human destiny is equal to understanding. If we deny this fundamental principle of what it means to be human, he reasoned, then we descend into the depths of mere barbarism.

Charles Darwin, wrote after the heyday of the Enlightenment, he nonetheless was directly influenced by its tradition, was trained as a theologian and yet still was driven to understand the underlying order that connected biological species he observed in his travels. His views threw into question many of the Bible's tenets, yet his reasoning was sound, and through a process of self-improvement (the struggle in his own mind to understand) he improved mankind by establishing a new benchmark of human knowledge.

The dogma of the church was further marginalized. The fear of repercussion from the church was overshadowed by the wave of understanding that his views created in people, and by the truth to his observations.

The modern-day Punk thought process, driven by this desire to understand, is a carbon-copy of the Enlightenment tradition. The fact that so many historical examples exist that reveal a will to destroy dogma leads to a powerful tenet: It is a natural trait of civilized humans to be original. The fact that uniqueness is so rare reveals that our nature is stifled by an equally potent opposing force: fear.

PUNK IS: a process of questioning and commitment to understanding that results in self-progress, and by extrapolation, could lead to social progress.

If enough people feel free, and are encouraged to use their skills of observation and reason, grand truths will emerge. These truths are acknowledged and accepted not because they were force-fed by some totalitarian entity, but because everyone has a similar experience when observing them.

The fact that Punks can relate to one another on issues of prejudice comes from a shared experience of being treated poorly by people who don't want them around. Each has his/her own experience of being shunned, and each can relate to another's story of alienation without some kind of adherence to a code of behavior.

The truth of prejudice is derived from the experience they all share, not from a written formula or constitution they have to abide by. Punks learn from this experience that prejudice is wrong, it is a principle they live by; they didn't learn it from a textbook. Without striving to understand, and provoking the held beliefs, the truth remains shrouded behind custom, inactivity, and prescriptive ideology.

WHAT IS TRUTH?

Philosophers distinguish between capital "T" truth and truth with a small "t". Punks deny the former.

Truth with a capital "T" assumes that there is an order prescribed by some transcendental being. That is to say that truth comes ultimately from God, who had a plan for everything when he created the universe.

Little "t" truth is that which we figure out for ourselves, and which we all can agree upon due to similar experience and observations of the world. It is also known as objective truth, from within ourselves, revealed here on this earth; as opposed to big T truth, which comes from outside and is projected down to us, specifically for us to follow.

Morality need not be thought of as a product only of big "T" truth. Objective truth lends itself just as readily to a moralistic, spiritual culture.

PUNK IS: a belief that this world is what we make of it, truth comes from our understanding of the way things are, not from the blind adherence to prescriptions about the way things should be.

Punk's dependence on objective truth comes from the shared experience of going against the grain. Anyone who has stood out in a crowd feels the truth of the experience. No one had to write a doctrine in order for the outcast to understand what it meant to be different. The truth was plain enough, and that truth could be understood and agreed upon by all those who shared a common experience.

WHAT IS FEAR?

The fears that drive people to conform have caused dismal periods in human history. The so-called Dark Ages, were tranquil and without upheaval, but also dismally quiet and pestilent, nary a contrasting view to be found. The pseudo-comfort and tranquility that the people of the Dark Ages experienced, by conforming to a rigidly enforced bureaucracy enforced by the king and church, was masked entirely by the misery they had to endure in their day to day life.

Life is easy as a peasant, no direction, no purpose, just produce more goods and offspring for the benefit of the king. But using fear to control peasants (or modern-day blue-collar workers for that matter) is just a short-term foul exercise, because peasants have the same mental equipment as the royalty.

The deeply ingrained biological traits of self-recognition and the desire to express the self cannot be quashed for long. Eventually peasants realize that life without the practice of reason is as good as being a farm animal. Being controlled by fear is the same as being biologically inert, unable to take part in the human drama, merely wasting away.

The fear that controls human behavior is learned. It is different from the immediate, reflexive, run-away-from-the- nasty-stimulus response that other creatures employ to stay alive. We have motor reflexes like these as well, but fear of failure, and fear of speaking out come from the limbic system.

The limbic system is a network of neurons in our brain that control our most deep-seated emotions. It connects two parts of the brain together: the midbrain, where sensory information is sent (i.e. sight and hearing stimuli) and the forebrain, where that information is processed. Although the forebrain has been around for at least 480 million years (it was present in the earliest vertebrates), it evolved special functions with the advent of humankind.

A specialized portion of the forebrain, called the cerebral cortex, is highly developed in humans. 95% of our cerebral cortex is responsible for associative mental activities like contemplation and planning. The other 5% is responsible for processing motor and sensory information.

By comparison, a mouse (also considered a higher vertebrate), has a cerebral cortex with only 5% of its neurons devoted to associative functions, while 95% are devoted to motor and sensory fuctions.

The highly developed limbic system is at the core of what it means to be human. We differ from other animals in the amount of time we spend planning, contemplating, and expressing ourselves. Our limbic system is very powerful. It can over-ride primitive emotions, and suppress deep desires.

Anyone who has ever seen a sad movie with friends, and willfully held back tears because they didn't want their friends to see them crying, employed the power of their limbic system. They contemplated the repercussions of their friends reaction to crying, and shut off the emotional cascade that would have brought the tears.

In the same way that rationality is the product of the limbic system, fear is also centered in the same neurons of the limbic system. Fear is usually rational behavior, based on irrational thoughts, and it can freeze the processing power of the cerebral cortex. Denial and fear go hand in hand, and both are examples of how our limbic system can suppress obvious stimuli and promote behavior that is safe and conforming.

The limbic system is like any other organ in the sense that it can operate unchecked to produce detrimental results. Being in touch with our bodies leads to overall general health, and the limbic system needs constant attention in order to master it. To overcome fear, one needs to be in touch with their limbic system, and recognize when it is suppressing the obvious.

Etiquette and "being nice" are forms of limbic-system repression, necessary at times, but ultimately demeaning of human originality. Lying is the ultimate form of limbic-system repression. It is a denial of the obvious. Truth-tellers, those who are authentic and trustworthy, have learned to master their limbic system. They recognize the desire to lie, but rationalize the futility of advocating something that is not true.

Liars, on the other hand, are slaves to their limbic system, out of touch with their most basic mental capacities. Their behavior is guarded and shifty because they let their flawed reasoning, to cover up the obvious, control their entire makeup. They eventually have to give in to the truth and concede defeat, but only after every possible avenue of deception and twisted logic has been advocated in the interest of hiding their fear.

Politicians, Clergymen, Business leaders, and Judges are masters of twisted logic and promotion of fear. They make good intellectual targets for Punkers because they don't respect people who have learned to master their limbic systems. And Punkers are not afraid to point out that which is obvious, even if it means their social status might be jeopardized.

PUNK IS: the constant struggle against fear of social repercussions.

THE PUNK MOVEMENT

I have tried to enumerate some of the factors that make Punk a movement, in the cultural sense. The typical stereotype of a feeble-minded ruffian vandalizing, destroying, stealing, fighting, or arguing in the name of some empty, short-lived cause is no more punk than the pretty-face-empty-head image of today's pop stars.

Because it is so easy for record companies to sell images of violence, sex, and self-importance, many bands have taken the bait and portrayed themselves as Punks, without realizing that they were actually perpetuating a stereotype of conformity that is wholly un-punk.

The "come join us" attitude that seeks to attract followers, usually results in a rabble of weak people who think that their power lies in the large numbers of like-minded clones they have compiled. There is no strength in numbers however, if the people are glued together by a short-sighted, self-serving, fear-induced mantra that promotes factions and exclusionary principles.

Strong ideologies don't require a mob, they persist through time, and never go away, because they are intimately connected to our biology. They are part of what it means to exist as Homo sapiens. Punk typifies that tradition.

It is a movement of epic proportions, that transcends the immediacy of the here-and- now, because it is, was, and always will be there-and-forever, as long as humans walk the earth.

As we enter a new era in the voracious march of culture, Punks will have their day. The internet has allowed people to communicate directly once again. On the web, human behavior is interactive, like it was before the advent of mass-media.

People now focus on ideological discussions and lifestyle issues, as opposed to the classic 20th century behavior of closing oneself off from cohorts, and adhering to a network's, or commercial's prescriptive code of acceptable behavior. The lies, and mysteries of elitism will erode quickly as the global conversation that transpires daily on the web invades more people's lives.

The world population will be more receptive to alternative ideologies because they will be creating them. People will be less receptive to ideologies of out- dated institutions because the holes and flaws in their logic will be ever more amplified when they are broadcast instantly around the world as they become revealed.

The "Strength-In-Understanding", and "Knowledge-Is-Power" ethics that Punks maintain will become the norm. The rigidity, brutishness, and futility of secret agendas will be made obvious, paving the way to an appreciation of human uniqueness, and a new era of originality.

WHO IS PUNK?

Everyone has the potential to be punk. It is much harder for someone who comes from a placid, un-challenging, ignorant upbringing, because they don't see the value in questioning or provoking the institutions that gave them such tranquility. But such examples of carefree existence are rare in today's shrinking world.

Eternal questions still burn in the minds of most people. What it means to be human is becoming more clear every decade. Sometimes, people are trained to follow the safe path to an early grave by consuming and repeating the dogma of a fearful aristocracy.

On the other hand, the human spirit is hard to kill. Punk is a microcosm of the human spirit. Punks succeed with their minds, not their brute force. They advance society by their diversity, not their conformity. They motivate others by inclusion, not domination.

They are at the front lines of self-betterment and by extrapolation can improve the complexion of the human race. They adhere to unwritten universal principles of human emotion, obvious to anyone, and shun elitist codes of behavior, or secret agendas. They embody the hope of the future, and reveal the flaws of the past. Don't tell them what to do, they are already leading you.

PUNK IS: the personal expression of uniqueness that comes from the experiences of growing up in touch with our human ability to reason and ask questions.

PUNK IS: a movement that serves to refute social attitudes that have been perpetuated through willful ignorance of human nature.

PUNK IS: a process of questioning and commitment to understanding that results in self-progress, and through repetition, flowers into social evolution.

PUNK IS: a belief that this world is what we make of it, truth comes from our understanding of the way things are, not from the blind adherence to prescriptions about the way things should be.

PUNK IS: the constant struggle against fear of social repercussions.

posted 2,038 days ago by Greggraffin

Peace.

"There's no justice... Just a cause and a cure... For a killer's creature... Which we all endure"

My metamorphosis is in full swing.

What do I mean by that? I'm not going to be the quiet, keep-to-yourself Caitlyn anymore. I'm not going to be fed the lies of the government and listen to the things that I don't believe in.

Yes. My new favorite band has become Anti-flag. If you have never heard of them, or heard anything from them, I suggest buying a copy of their latest album, "Moblize". Or perhaps, you can ask me and I will make a compilation of A-F songs for you. But this band and the thoughts of the members can not be kept quiet like it is.
<http://www.anti-flag.com>

Anyway... I found an interesting article written by Justin Sane, front man for this wonderful band. It's mostly just a bunch of stuff about being anti-mainstream media. But if you have the time, you should read it. It makes you think. And thinking is good. If you don't like it, comment on it. Bitch at me. I won't care much. I believe in what I believe in. And if you don't want to agree, then who gives a fuck. You can be a fascist like the rest of them.

April 7th, 2004 | JUSTIN SANE ON THE MEDIA
Written by Justin Sane

For what feels like a millennium I’ve been wanting to write a little piece on how the American people are continuously misinformed by the for-profit media, but the reality is that my life between Anti-Flag, A-F Records, Underground Action Alliance, attending conferences and protests around the country, and everything in between has kept me from doing so. Fortunately, Anti-Flag is in the middle of our first significant break from touring in months and I’ve had the opportunity to tune into radio to hear what the corporate-media machine is selling as “news”. UNFORTUNATELY, the lack of reality in “reporting” (if you want to call it that) is enough to make me feel as if I live on another planet.

Before diving into a critique of media lies I’d like to provide you with a short list of alternate media sources that report something I like to refer to as “reality.” From there I’ll give you a few examples of what I’m talking about when I say ingesting for-profit media reports practically makes me want to kill myself! However, an expose or in-depth analysis on the media could take a life time, so instead I’m going to point out a few examples of the short comings that set off my BS detector while listening to audio media, in particular that “LIBERAL GIANT” known to many as National Public Radio (NPR), or as I like to call it, National RePUBLICAN Radio. My logic is as follows: If NPR is hemorrhaging propaganda (purposely or otherwise), I think it’s safe to say that anything less than NPR bled to death long ago.

I’m writing this for two reasons. First, because when I hear alternatives to the mainstream for-profit media, it becomes obvious to me that we are being misled and THAT MAKES ME ANGRY! We deserve better. The WORLD deserves better! Second, I’m trying to illustrate why it would be worthwhile for YOU to give a different kind of news program a CHANCE! To encourage you to check out the alternative just once! I’m simply saying if you really care about the world and what is going on in it then it’s important to receive information from an alternate source that could have an impact on your point of view and ultimately the decisions you make. After all, an informed public is essential if justice and democracy are to thrive; or considering the current state of affairs, I’d argue that an informed public is essential if justice and democracy are FINALLY going to OCCUR- but that’s an entire essay in and of itself.

That said, I challenge you to listen to Democracy Now or Flash Points for ONE WEEK! Do it while you answer your email or while you do your work! *wink* Compare them to NPR, CNN, Fox News, etc... At that point you can tell me I’m on crack, OR, as I suspect those of you with a higher intellect and deeper sense of right and wrong will do, heap praises upon me for turning you onto a valuable resource. (Wink!)

In closing, while listening to the media I have recommended I hope you’ll open your mind to perspectives that are VERY out of step with the years of brainwashing you’ve endured. Yeah, these news sources are liberal, even radical compared to the right-wing nonsense flooding the airwaves these days, but that doesn’t make them UNTRUE or WRONG! Many of the not-for-profit media have sources and guests that come from places your life’s worth of for-profit media has never taken you; therefore, while rolling your eyes at the reporting from the radical left please keep in mind thoughts such as: “What makes an NPR or CNN report more reputable than a Pacifica Radio Network report? Why is it OK when a reporter on NPR or CNN gives his or her opinion on an issue but I automatically attack it as propaganda when someone of the left does so? What makes the word of someone from the Bush Regime more true or acceptable than that of someone from a non-profit watch dog group? Etc, etc...” Happy listening and please pray (or think positively, etc...) that the world is rescued from the mass insanity that currently engulfs it!
Peace Out and will somebody PLEASE tell me why I choose to live in a city that is not a tropical paradise?!?!
Love, Justin Sane XOXO

-THE PACIFICA RADIO NETWORK www.pacifica.org is an incredible source of media. Pacifica is the home of many amazing programs including:

-DEMOCRACY NOW! with Amy Goodman (mon-fri. streaming/downloads available at www.pacifica.org or www.democracynow.org - Also available on Free Speech TV, channel 9415 on Dish Network - Broadcast on radio in Pittsburgh every weekday on WRCT 88.3 FM at 8AM (and rebroadcast at 9AM on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays).

- FLASH POINTS with Dennis Bernstein (mon-fri. streaming/downloads available at www.pacifica.org or www.flashpoints.net)

-NOW WITH BILL MOYERS (weekly on PBS - check your local TV listings - www.pbs.org/now)

-THE VISIONARY ACTIVIST SHOW with Caroline Casey <http://www.visionaryactivism.com> For those of you into the spiritual world you might enjoy Caroline Casey. She could strike you as bizarre until you get to know her and understand what she’s talking about but if you have an open mind you’ll more than likely grow to love her! From her bio, “Caroline W. Casey is a Visionary Activist Astrologer, devoted to the principle that Imagination lays the tracks for the Reality Train to follow.”

-FREE SPEECH TV - channel 9415 of the DISH network. I’ve never seen this because I do not have Dish Network, but I have heard it’s good.

-INFORMATION CLEARING HOUSE www.informationclearinghouse.info - A source of unreported or under reported news from around the world containing both audio and visual media including:
A MUST SEE!! -UNPRECEDENTED www.informationclearinghouse.info/article5278.htm An amazing documentary that tells the true story of what happened in Florida during the 2000 Presidential election. “...an election marred by suspicious irregularities, electoral injustices, and sinister voter purges...”

-FOR A LIST OF PRINT/ONLINE MEDIA CLICK HERE!

-MORE GREAT MEDIA LINKS OF ALL KINDS AT:
www.undergroundactionalliance.org

NPR AND WAR STORIES
Lately NPR has taken to doing pieces on US Soldiers killed in Iraq. NPR interviews their families who explain how sweet their dead son or daughter was in life. They share stories about the dead soldiers’ hobbies, passions, love of life. So far so good! Humanizing faceless soldiers is important in driving home the idea that in war PEOPLE are mutilated, lives are shattered, pain and suffering are a reality, lives (in the literal sense of a “life time”) are lost. They are people, not names, numbers, statistics, Privates, Sergeants, G.I.’s, soldiers, nationalities- they are living human beings who like you and I contributed to the world. That humanizing side of the story is all good.

The problem comes when the story ends because the reporter fails when it comes to balance. No interview takes place with a dead Iraqi soldier’s family. No Iraqi mothers or fathers crying as they tell of their child who loved sports and music, who sacrificed his schooling to work on the family farm so his family wouldn’t starve to death. No face, no heart, no soul, no humanity given to the soldiers of Iraq who no more longed to die than their American counterparts. In the context of the current political reality of the American occupation of Iraq, this failure is not only irresponsible, it’s arrogant and racist! Just as bad, it takes the death and suffering of American soldiers and their families and turns it into propaganda! When we start to look at the lives of the Iraqi dead we start to realize that their lives, their morals, hopes and dreams, while culturally different and seemingly different from ours, are at core very similar. When we see the people of Iraq as people, not as ‘Iraqis’, we start to scrape off the layer of propaganda scum that has built up on our inner logic processors and our moral center. Deep, possibly subconscious thoughts of, “Our boys are human beings, Iraqis are godless dispassionate murderers!” start to melt away.

Practically no American news agency bothers to report on the number of dead Iraqi soldiers and citizens that have been killed in this illegal war. Of course, even if they wanted to, they could not get those number from the Pentagon because it is the Pentagon’s policy NOT TO COUNT THEM!

THE BUSH REGIME’S EXTREME LEVEL OF SECRECY
Has anybody noticed that the corporate media has not attacked the Bush Regime regarding their extreme level of secrecy? Even the former Head of Council to President Nixon, John Dean, who served time because of his involvement in the White House cover up of Watergate, said on Democracy Now, “George Bush and Dick Cheney are undoubtably running the most secretive presidency of my lifetime.” (Democracy Now - April 6, 2004) In an interview on NOW with Bill Moyers (April 2, 2004) Dean said that the Bush Regime is so rife with corruption that Bush should be impeached! This is a guy who worked for NIXON - widely regarded as one of the most corrupt presidents in US history. Considering John Dean’s past, if he has objections to the level of secrecy surrounding the Bush White House it’s hard to believe that the for-profit media made so little out of the issue.

While NPR made no mention of it, Democracy Now reported on various occasions (including April 6th, 2004) that in order for the White House to agree to have Condaleeza Rice testify under oath in front of the Congressional 911 Commission, the Commission had to agree not to call any more witnesses from The White House, to limit Rice’s testimony to two and half hours, and that Bush and Cheny could testify together while not under oath or in public. NPR made NO mention that a “deal” was brokered and left out nearly all of the pertinent details I just listed! What else hasn’t the corporate media been questioning or observing in regards to the 911 Commission? Here’s a starter list:

1. Why the hell should a congressional panel investigating one of the greatest catastrophes in US history have to make deals with the White House in order to conduct their investigation? The Bush Regime, who claim to care deeply about the victims of 911, should prove it by bending over backward to help Congress examine what went wrong on 911, instead they have blocked, resisted and stalled the process at every turn.
2. If the Bush Regime isn’t covering up incriminating evidence or evidence that at the very LEAST makes the Bush Regime look bad in regards to Iraq and 911, then why are they putting up so many road blocks to the investigation surrounding this issue? More to the point, if the commission can’t get testimony from anyone from the White House to corroborate what Rice says, what is to stop her from saying anything she wants? With the current deal there won’t be anyone from the Bush White House to corroborate or dispute her testimony. The for-profit media has been reporting the Bush Regime’s line that there is an established precedent in history whereby the President does not allow the sitting National Security Advisor to testify under oath in front of Congress. When reporting this bit of history the same media fail to note that both president’s Carter and Clinton allowed their National Security Advisors to testify under oath in front of Congress in regards to scandals facing their presidencies.

At this stage, The White House’s obstruction of justice and truth through secrecy should be so beat on by for-profit media that our ear drums are ringing! Instead, nothing but beautiful silence. Alternative not-for profit media HAS been pounding these issues but unfortunately the drum they have to pound is not nearly as big or loud enough. Maybe the corporate media hacks have forgotten that the foundation of democracy is openness, a concept that should be doubly obvious and important in the eyes of “the free press”, whose very existence depends not only on the right of free speech, but also the right to seek and report the truth. Or maybe the problem is that the corporate media has little concern for “reporting” the truth because they’re not about “reporting”; they’re about “entertaining”, in other words: making money! Remember they are the “for-profit media” whose corporate doctrine calls for them to turn a profit as quickly and cheaply as possible. That said, their bottom line is concerned with “selling” entertainment in order to lure in advertisers, not truth seeking in order to inform the public. (Close your eyes and imagine this conversation at Fox News: “Who cares what we report as long as we have a good story to give to the masses while they choke down the cake the Ruling Class feeds them?”)

Haiti
In regards to reporting recent events in Haiti, NPR and the rest of the corporate media ought to be ashamed of themselves! None of them came close to reporting the truth or anything resembling it over the past two months! Not-for profit media did an incredible job covering the situation in Haiti via on the ground reporters and interviews with US House of Representatives members deeply involved in US/Haiti relations such Representative Maxine Waters. I think understanding what happened in Haiti is critically important because once you know the truth it becomes so obvious to you on a personal level that the Bush Regime blatantly lied about their role in the recent Haitian coup. That fact drives home the realization that the Bush Regime know no depths in the lies they’re willing to tell regarding Iraq or anything else! The entire tale of Haiti is too in depth for me to cover, but in short, the United States backed a coup led by convicted Haitian killers and drug dealers against Haiti’s democratically elected president (who in Haiti’s last election received over 90% of the vote!) in order to install a regime that would pander to US-multinational corporations deeply invested in Haiti. The for-profit media around the world have missed the story because they relied on reports filed by Haitian media owned and operated by those with a vested interest in installing the US backed regime. This is a classic example of for-profit media laziness and greed in that many media sources decided it was too costly to invest time and resources in a story about the poorest country in the western hemisphere that quite frankly most westerners could care less about. So instead, most for-profit media simply reported whatever story the for-profit Haitian media reported- meaning that whether they meant to or not, the US corporate media reported misinformation. You can learn the entire horrific tale of the subversion of democracy in Haiti by the Bush regime by listening to archived shows located on the web sites of Democracy Now and Flash Points, however there are about 2 weeks worth of programs to cover to get the full story. In the case of Haiti alone, Condaleeza Rice, Colin Powell, Dick Cheney, and George W. Bush Jr, ought to be put on trail in international court.

MAINE PASSES ANTI-PATRIOT ACT RESOLUTION
“The Maine Legislature passed a resolution criticizing the USA Patriot Act, becoming the fourth state to do so. The resolution asks Congress to review the act and ensure that future laws "do not infringe on Americans' civil rights and liberties." - DEMOCRACY NOW - MARCH 26, 2004
NPR’s reporting on this fact: ZERO! Furthermore, the not-for profit media has been noting countless city’s and communities that have passed resolutions against the Patriot Act, while for-profit-media hardly acknowledges the occurrence of such resolutions.

ADVERTISING ON THE FOR PROFIT MEDIA
How about the ads or “underwriters” on NPR these days... Basically, when it comes to putting a pretty face on corporations such as weapons manufacturers and oil companies with horrible environmental, labor, and human rights records, NPR has the market cornered! One of my favorites is the current WALMART acknowledgment on NPR during which the NPR commentator explains that Walmart helps build communities. Oh really? Even the CBS Evening News has interviewed activists regarding Walmart’s destruction of communities by devastating local economies! (April 5, 2004) Walmart does offer low shelf prices but in the end those low costs are paid for by the communities they are in by:
1. Wiping out local independent competition, thus leaving no high paying jobs in the community.
2. Skyrocketing the demand on public services that Walmart employees can no longer afford because they are paid so poorly. The price may not be high at the store, but when the cost of higher taxes to support social services is factored in, the prices are NOT cheap.
3. Finally, WALMART stocks its store primarily with merchandise that is made by slave labor in other countries which sucks money out of the local manufacturing sector of America on top of exploiting people’s all over the world. That said, when it comes to advertising on NPR, I have to say, GOOD JOB NPR! You’re my LIBERAL hero!

JOBS CREATION UNDER BUSH
The early April radio reports on last quarter’s “jobs creation” and unemployment numbers were laughable! NPR reported the number of jobs the Federal Government claimed were created but did NOT report that nearly 25% of the new jobs were “created” as a result of the California grocery workers’ strike ending! In other words, the Bush Regime counted striking workers going back to existing jobs as new jobs! NPR also neglected to highlight that many of the new jobs “created” in this economy are low-paying service industry jobs, not high-paying manufacturing jobs that can adequately support a family. Want to hear something funny? There was actually a plan by the Bush Regime to count hamburger flippers at fast-food joints as “manufacturing jobs”, because after all, they’re manufacturing something, right? Pathetic!

GLOBAL WARMING
On our most recent trip to Europe I was surprised by the number of the Europeans I talked to who were almost obsessed with discussing the issue of global warming. Yes, it’s an important issue, but the subject came up much more often and with a more serious tone then it ever does during interviews or in my daily interactions in the US. When I got back to the US it all made sense when I heard a report that apparently is NOT new news to Europe, but is new to the USA. On March 29, 2004 Democracy Now sited a report from the Independent of London (an English news paper) that said levels of CO2 in the atmosphere have risen by a record amount in the past year, according to data based on measurements conducted by US Government scientists, raising fears that global warming may be accelerating out of control. The study showed that CO2 has risen sharply in each of the last 3 years and hypothesized that global warming may be feeding itself with higher levels of CO2 which drives new CO2 levels even higher. As I did a little more digging I found that while the entire world is in grave danger from global climate change, Europe is expected to be hit early and especially hard by it which explains the Europeans high awareness and desire to discuss the problem.

A CONCLUSION
In short my conclusion is simple. There is a lot of news that is not considered news worthy in the world of the for-profit media. What you know and do not know has the potential to harm or help not only you but many people the world over. There are reliable and credible sources of information at your command who care about democracy, equality, justice. It’s simply up to you to make the most of them. Please do. Thank you. Love and Peace - Justin Sane April 7, 2004

Okay. Pass the word on if you did enjoy that.

..::I am the revolution::..
Peace.

A-N-A-R-C-H-Y His name is Captain Anarchy but only in his mind...

It's been awhile guys...
I have to get a new modem for my computer. That sucks. If anybody can tell me where I can get one cheap, that'd be great. If not, fuck it. I'll go shopping in a day or two.

Anyway...
I find new ways to surprise my parents everyday. Explaination? Here:

I woke up around 11-ish this morning. My hair hasn't been washed in two days. I took a pair of jeans outta my dresser and some random-logoed shirt and just threw them on. It's summertime, I don't give a fuck. But anyway, my mom was surprised when I walked out of my room this way and asked me why I looked so... grungey. Is that even a word?? I just laughed at the use of the word and went on with my life.

Another interesting anecdote about my parents and their suprise at what I've become? Sure:

I went to the mall today and straight to Sam Goody. I found what I wanted there and unfortunately could not buy it. The Empire Strikes First. Couldn't buy it. It's cheaper at Hot Topic anyway. But that's beside the point. My mom asked me why the hell I would want something like that. I guess she still thinks that my favorite bands still include stuff like Goo Goo Dolls, Better Than Ezra, and Barenaked Ladies. Unfortunately... They don't. No. My favorite bands now include shit like Bad Religion (whom I've loved since I first heard "You" on THPS 2), Anti-flag, and The F Ups. So there.

Just more proof that my parents know little about me. Go figure.

"...A-N-A-R-C-H-Y His name is Captain Anarchy but only in his mind. A-N-A-R-C-H-Y He's so punk he's poser and he'll be one til he dies..."

..::Punk never died::..

When you trust me, when you finally believe in me, I will let you down...

Four days away from a computer and the usual people that I talk to has made me... Think. And it's pretty much driven me insane(-er than I have been).

But anyway... here goes...
I thought of something to do just to write out all my feelings.

Okay. This is what I did... I picked out five people that I tend to talk to everyday. The five are listed below. Next, I picked three things that I disliked about each of these people, and then three things that I liked about each person. Here goes:

(Note: The only order these people are in is alphabetical by first name.)

1.Chris
2.Cindi
3.Kitah
4.Jenn
5.Rachel

~D*I*S*L*I*K*E*S~

(1.)- 1. Obvious reasons that I could dislike Chris. HELLO!
2. He talks seldom. And when he does talk, it's hardly interesting.
3. His infatuation with calling me "emo" or "trans"

(2.)- 1. Obvious reasons that I could dislike Cindi. Once again: HELLO!!
2. The occasional "bitch-at-me-for-hardly-any-reason-only-to-end-up-being-normal-again" act.
3. When she DOES take my side.

(3.)- 1. Once again: The fact that I get bitched at. But who DOES like that??
2. The lack of her own personality. Really.
3. Bipolar much??

(4.)- 1. She's been "better" than me for years.
2. She's Mz. Perfect Trombone Player. Ugh.
3. Maybe a lil TOO blonde sometimes.

(5.)- 1. I get so confused talking to her sometimes...
2. Didn't she hate me at one point??
3. Okay. I can't think anymore.... I'm sure there is another.....

~L*I*K*E*N*E*S*S~

(1.)- 1. It IS pretty fun to argue with him...
2. Being with him was great while it lasted. But nothing lasts forever, right?
3. Um... We have similar interests...?

(2.)- 1. So much fun to talk to sometimes.
2. She and I DEFINATELY have similar interests.
3. Geometry and WH were GREAT! lol

(3.)- 1. Sometimes happens to be the only one whom I can tell somethings too... Believe it or not.
2. Practically my ONLY anime buddy.
3. Has some pretty interesting things to say sometimes.

(4.)- 1. She's been there for me almost all the time.
2. A great buddy to practice with.
3. My only fellow girl trombone player!!

(5.)- 1. Gotta love her when she's high!
2. She's been there for me at times too.
3. She's alwayz interesting!

If you read that, tell me I'm a heartless bitch... Tell me that I'm vicious, evil, maniacle even. And if you might be one of those people and got offended, tell me. I'll fix myself.

But I DO feel better now that I put that all down. Try it for yourself. It helps. Really.

..::Punk never died::..

God. Greenday. For the THIRD day in a row. Stuck in my head again. Go figure.

Anyway... That's not what this is about. This is about the elderly. And my new-found hatred for them.

I went to the store today. Fun fun. Not. I was doing something... I think... And from outta NOWHERE this elderly woman (I'd say mid to late 60s) PUSHES ME OUT OF THE WAY!! All I can say is:
WTF?!

I did nothing but push the woman back. I mean, hell, if she can push me, I can nudge her and it wouldn't make much of a difference. After I did so, she gave me this evil, demonic, and v. strange look. Serves you right, bitch. It's not cool for strange old people to invoke the Wrath of Caitlyn.

So... The moral of this... Next time some old guy tells you to "Respect your elders" tell him to shove that quote up his ass. Why respect a bunch of rude, wrinkly people if they're gonna die within 10-20 years anyway? Duh.

Sorry about my little episode last night. I'm ALL BETTER-NESS!! Talking to Jenn REALLY helped.

Anywayz, I got my marching band music in the mail today. Fun-ness. It's so hard too. I'm gonna have a WONDERFUL time practicing it. Not.

I saw Jordan at Galyan's yesterday. That was cool. I wouldn't have seen him had he not seen me first. lol. But he asked when our first mb meeting was. I'm starting to think that maybe I shouldn't have told him. But who cares, I'll be in St. Augustine when we have that meeting. He called me a slaker for that.

I also bough Catch-22. If you get the chance, you should read it. It's cool. And funny. And sarcastic. And ironic. And serious. It's JUST FOR ME! lol

Whatever.

Peace

He bitched at me cause I didn't say anything about killing him in the last one. So here goes.
Where has all the REAL punk gone?!

Alright. I posted it in a community and now I think I'll post it here.
It is a mini-rant on pop-punk and various bands that claim the wonderful title of "punk". Enjoy:

WHERE HAS ALL THE REAL PUNK GONE?

Do you remember the first time you stuck a Rancid CD in your CD player? Anti-flag? Bad Religion? Pully? Pennywise? Do you remember the upbeat rhythms? The SOCAL lead vocals? The drum riffs? Do you remember the way it made you FEEL?

Now think back to the first time you listened to a band named Good Charlette (or however the hell it's spelled). Avril Lavenge (or however the hell it's spelled). Simple Plan. Compare those three to your favorite TRUE punk bands. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE.

You can't classify GC under the punk umbrella.

I guess you can try. But it will be to no avail. Trust me. There are people out there (including me) who will shoot you down in a heartbeat.

And the music media is skewing this. THEY are the ones who stuck this so-so band in the genre that includes some of the best bands (in my opinion) of the late 80s/early 90s. THEY are the ones who have been telling this new generation that "Punk is coming back".

Psh. Yeah right. When the hell did punk ever die?!? Bad Religion and Anti-flag are still putting out CDs. As are Pennywise and 1208. PUNK NEVER DIED, BITCHES.

So... the next time you meet a kid who tries to tell you how awesome this "new" punk is, tell him to shove that thought up his ass and give him a REAL CD.

Okay. I feel better.

Peace
